Going To Nowhere

Former workers of the Făgăraş Chemical Plant, together with their children, stand in front of their home, ready to leave. They are no longer needed, yet they have nowhere to go.

The Wall

We are still living in two Romanias. The concept may sound dated, but I believe the divide has been pushed out of sight rather than overcome.

To me, this wall suggests the symbolic divide between two Romanias: the one we live in and the one they live in.

The Waiting Room

Many of the newly built residential developments offer almost no public space or social infrastructure. Schools, leisure areas and green spaces are absent, and hospitals or healthcare facilities are nowhere nearby. The access roads quickly become overcrowded, making emergency intervention difficult. Through staged photography, I create almost surrealist scenes, extreme situations, or oppressive moments, but these can easily be found in a society where care for people in difficulty remains deeply inadequate.

Alone Until the End

A society that prided itself on placing “concern for the people” at the heart of its values left behind orphanages filled with abandoned children treated in inhumane conditions, and exhausted elderly people who had worked their entire lives only to end up in poverty and neglect. It was hard to believe that such places could still exist – places where human beings are treated in ways that, in the 1990s, severely damaged the image of Romanian society on the world stage. And yet, decades later, we learn that such subhuman treatment is still taking place all around us, closer than we would ever care to imagine.
