The Journey – Destination Unknown I

Despite statistics pointing to significant economic growth in recent years, recent surveys reveal that a third of the country’s population faces the risk of poverty or social exclusion. More than two thirds of Romanians believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, and over half of its children want to leave.

These children are just beginning their journey through life. Yet one cannot help but wonder what future awaits them when this is the present they live in?

They are ready to go… But where to?…

Waiting for a Hot Meal

Politicians repeatedly announce that the economy is growing and the country is on the right track, yet these claims are contradicted by statistics from specialized institutions showing Romania among the poorest nations in Europe. Most people enjoying a decent standard of living cannot imagine that, just around the corner, entire communities are living at subsistence level. Thanks to the work of charitable organizations, foundations, and associations – funded by donations and mutual aid – these communities receive various goods, clothing, school supplies, and more. Whenever possible, they are also offered a hot meal.

The Worker’s Share

During the communist era, because everything belonged to the entire people – which effectively meant it belonged to no one –people learned to steal as much as possible and work as little as possible. Lies, theft, and corruption were perfected to an extraordinary degree during the communist years.

Unfortunately, this harmful habit persisted after the fall of communism, undermining the economy and slowing the return to any sense of normalcy. This theft of what belonged to everyone came hand in hand with a form of acceptance: It doesn’t matter that someone else is stealing, because I do the same. It was a kind of split personality. Hence “the indifference” with which people passively watched all the scheming that followed communism’s collapse – the fraudulent appropriations, in one form or another, all benefiting those who orchestrated them.

Modern Inconveniences

A striking feature is the vast gap between the wealthy and the poor. These two worlds coexist, yet they are not confined to distinct areas, and they can be encountered anywhere. An area may become attractive to higher-income groups without necessarily seeing any improvement in infrastructure.

The historian Lucian Boia points out: “Romania holds, by far, more negative records than any other country in the European Union. A very substantial book could be written on this subject. The most telling example is the ‘outdoor toilet at the back of the yard’, a true Romanian speciality and a clear sign of underdevelopment. […] Anywhere else in Europe, it would at most be a museum piece.”
