Nicolae Coșniceru is an independent visual artist with an MA and a PhD in Visual Arts from the National University of Arts Bucharest.

His practice encompasses staged photography, documentary photography, and object-based installation. His artistic research examines the social dynamics of contemporary Romania, with a particular focus on the anxieties surrounding identity. Throughout his practice, photography serves as a mode of critical inquiry, prompting viewers to examine the assumptions that shape their perceptions.

His work explores questions of identity and context, as well as how societies represent themselves visually. His training in the visual arts has led him to examine the shifting dynamics of the present, using images to question and critically interpret contemporary reality.

Working with both staged and documentary photography, Coșniceru constructs scenes that reflect broader social realities, reinterpreting the subtleties of everyday life, often with humour. Within this visual universe, reality merges almost imperceptibly with allegory and frequently extends beyond the physical boundaries of the photographic frame, drawing the viewer into the narrative. This conceptual convergence of the real and the imagined is central to Coșniceru’s practice and defines his distinctive artistic language.

For more than two decades, Nicolae Coșniceru has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions in Romania and internationally. He has also participated in exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and conferences in the visual arts, both in Romania and internationally, and has published several books of photography.
