4’33”
In several private nursing homes, irregularities were deliberately concealed, most notably the number of residents, which far exceeded the facilities’ official capacity. To prevent this situation from being revealed during inspections by the authorities, frail and ill elderly people were secretly moved from a nursing home to two unfinished buildings in a nearby field. The buildings had no utilities and were located about half a kilometre from the road; access to the property was difficult, and there were no houses or neighbours nearby.
I made this film in an attempt to convey feelings of distance, abandonment and alienation. The title, 4-33, takes its cue from John Cage’s 4′33″. Given that reference, one might expect silence to have a visual equivalent: a pause in the form of a black screen. Instead, that expectation is broken by the unsettling sight that awaits at the end of a road through the unknown.
